In 2001, MSD Animal Health introduced Porcilis® PRRS as the first vaccine against PRRSV1, the European strain of the virus, with the IDAL device, a needle-less, intradermal delivery system that allows more efficient and precise vaccine application.

The idea behind intradermal vaccination is to reduce stress to the pigs, avoid needle contamination, tissue damage, and to reduce handling. By letting pigs be pigs, MSD Animal Health pioneered a better way to vaccinate and, along the way, helped improve productivity and reduce antimicrobial use, all while protecting pigs from PRRS.
